Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) are posted here. If you have a query that is not answered, you are welcome to ask us.

Q

What is the difference between PLANNING and ADVISING?

A

We feel we have no right to advise you what to do with your money until we understand you and your aspirations. By spending more time focussing on you, we can better align our advice to what it is that you require.Advising is where someone recommends a product, such as a transactional service. For example, they propose that you set up an ISA or a Pension. Now this may not be the wrong advice, but without proper planning, how will you know that it is the correct outcome?

You would not build a house without thorough floorplans, architect's blueprints and detailed measurements and much in the same way, why would you entertain the thought of guessing with your savings and your future, especially when you are most likely paying good hard earned money for the advice?

We do provide advice to clients, but we prefer that one has as few products set up as possible. Our independence and alternative way of working means that we do not rely on the "sale" of products to justify a fee, unlike most others. Instead, we will work with you to understand your current and desired lifestyle and then build a solid plan that you can rely on to help you achieve your goals.

Q

How do I pay for advice

A

We are remunerated in whichever way works best for you. We operate on fixed fees including on a retainer basis, percentage of investments or hourly rate. We will never charge monies without being clear that you will receive value for money and only when you are completely happy with the works that have been carried out.

Q

Are you VAT registered

A

A quirky ruling with HMRC legislation means that we are not required to be VAT registered with the vast majority of our business dealings. We keep a very close eye on this (for good reason of course!) and so if this does change, we will certainly notify all. Some firms charge VAT exclusively and we find they often do not understand the rules correctly, which can mean that you are paying more than is necessary.

We are remunerated solely by clients in whichever method is best for you.

Q

Are you really Independent? Why is this important?

A

We pride ourselves on offering true independent advice.  We have a unique way of working that allows us to be disconnected from having to "sell" or "push" any products from providers.  This way, we can sit and spend time with you understanding what is most important to you. If we do make any changes to your existing holdings, or we do set up anything, there is research carried out to make sure it is right for you and the research is always available for you to view.

If you have an IFA currently, it is important to ask what research has been carried out to ensure your holdings are correct for you. We see most of the time clients "shoehorned" into certain products and providers, that is for the benefit of the adviser and not you. This is not the best outcome for you in our opinion!

We recommend that you ask what systems your current adviser utilises to ensure impartiality; this is often a good way of understanding if they believe in their proposition and are committed to investing in clients by having the latest software to deliver the best possible outcomes for you.

Q

Are you here for the long term?

A

Yes, it is important to us that our clients have continuity for the long term and we enjoy an excellent rapport and seeing client goals come to fruition. You should make sure that if you have a current adviser, or are considering an adviser that they are there for the long term, otherwise you may be paying more than necessary each time to move.

Q

Location wise, do you have geographical restrictions for where clients are based?

A

We have no geographical boundaries, as we utilise the latest technology available allowing us to service clients remotely as well as face to face. Our offices currently sit in Swindon, Wiltshire, Manchester and London.

Q

Who do you advise?

A

We have no set client type and as such it is always worth enquiring. If we feel that we are not the best people placed to assist you, we will let you know and always provide a pointer in the right direction. This website is primarily for UK residents and any information is based on our understanding of current tax law, which is subject to change.

Q

Do you only look at certain minimum or maximum amounts of money?

A

As well as advising on pensions, investments, inheritances and other areas we will also assist with elements of tax planning. We focus on the value we can bring to you in lots of different ways. Therefore there are no minimum or maximum amounts of money that we advise on, we just make sure that you will receive value for money factoring in all costs.

Q

Is my information secure?

A

Yes absolutely, we adhere to guidance and rules as provided and set by both the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and the Data Protection Act (DPA), holding valid licences.  We only ask for information that we need to be able to help you, have no interest in gathering information on people that are not necessary and anything we do hold will be disposed of securely when no longer required.

Q

How do I search to check firms are regulated?

A

Firms and individuals can only offer most financial products and services in the UK if they are authorised, registered or approved to do so, or are otherwise exempt. Yet some act without our authorisation or registration, or without being exempt, and some knowingly run scams.

If you deal with a firm (or individual) that is not regulated you may not be covered by the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) or the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) if things go wrong. Search for a firm or individual to find out how you are protected on the register by Clicking here.

If you are ever in doubt regarding your firm, or contact from another firm then speak to the Regulator straight away, or send us a message.

Q

Who is the Regulator & How do I contact them?

A

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) regulates and supervises the conduct of more than 50,000 firms in the UK that provide financial products and services to both UK and international customers.

The Prudential Regulatory Authority (PRA) is responsible for the "prudential regulation" and supervision of banks, building societies, credit unions, insurers and major investment firms.  The FCA also regulates the prudential standards of firms not covered by the PRA.
